Mastertech Silicon Nitride Inserts
Overview
Silicon Nitride (Si3N4) inserts offer increased resistance to abrasion and thermal shock over regular ceramics and have high toughness to resist fracturing.
Silicon nitride inserts are well suited for rough, interrupted cutting of cast iron with heavier depths of cut. They are also used to mill cast iron with positive tool geometries and can enable cutting speeds of 800 in./min or more.
While having great fracture resistance, they can be more subject to chemical wear. CVD coatings such as titanium nitride (TiN) have been developed to mitigate chemical wear and have expanded the range of applications for silicon nitride inserts.
